Opinion: What Really Happened at the Port of Beirut?

The author explains why he feels certain that explosives, ammunition, and missile fuel, which are highly volatile and flammable substances, were stored by Hezbollah in the Beirut warehouse after being shipped from Iran.

The official report of the Lebanese authorities on the massive August 4 explosion at the Port of Beirut is that a warehouse near the water containing 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded. They claim that this material had been in the warehouse for over six years, with the approval of the court, and confirmed this claim with documentation.

With all due respect to the Lebanese authorities, I do not buy this story. I believe that explosives, ammunition, and missile fuel (which are highly volatile and flammable substances) were stored by Hezbollah in this warehouse after being shipped from Iran. There are several reasons why I believe this.

There was a series of at least three explosions, each of which had a different result. The first created a gray column of smoke that remained for several minutes. The second, a column of red smoke, also remained for several minutes, while the third created a white mushroom cloud that dissipated within seconds. This suggests that at least three different materials were stored in that warehouse.

Anyone familiar with how a port operates knows that the front row of warehouses, which are closest to the water, are used for short-term storage. Cargo that is meant to be stored long-term is moved to warehouses further away from the water.

Anyone who ships sensitive cargo and does not want it to be seen, photographed, or targeted by others from air, space, or ground tries to hide it as close as possible to the water. The warehouse that exploded was on the water’s edge.

After Israel (according to foreign sources) attacked the warehouses at Damascus Airport several times, Beirut Seaport replaced Damascus Airport as the destination for Hezbollah’s ammunition and explosives imports from Iran. What used to arrive at Damascus Airport by air is now brought to Beirut by ship. For Hezbollah’s purposes, the warehouses at the port of Beirut have replaced the warehouses of Damascus Airport.

What probably happened on August 4 was an explosion of volatile and flammable materials that were incorrectly stored by Hezbollah for at least a day in a metal, non-airconditioned warehouse. As it is midsummer, temperatures are very high. I believe missile-fuel fumes evaporated from a container and touched the hot wall or ceiling, where they ignited and caused a chain reaction of explosions.
Will Nasrallah Suffer ‘Heart Attack’?

Less than an hour after the explosions, Hezbollah announced that the exploded material was ammonium nitrate. Hezbollah was the first to report it. The reason: Hezbollah was looking for a way to cover up its own negligence and establish an official version that deflected attention away from itself, because no one in the government would dare contradict them.

I suspect that very few people in Lebanon buy Hezbollah’s version of the story. I think Hassan Nasrallah is viewed by the Iranians and, indeed, by his own friends in Hezbollah as personally responsible for this disaster. I would not be surprised to hear that he has suffered a “heart attack” and is thus ending his role as Hezbollah’s secretary general. Perhaps the “heart attack” will be fatal.

Dr Kedar, I agree with you. Ammonium Nitrate, Fertilizer known as LAN, was used as an explosive in my country for open cast mining to open coal seams. However when I visited a mine in the 1980's, the blast foreman explained what he termed "slurry" - the LAN spiked with diesoline to facilitate ignition[of cause, with a detonator]. LAN cannot explode by itself. So, If LAN[ammonium nitrate] of that quantity, was stored in that warehouse, what made it explode???? Just asking

An intelligent article, and it confirms the assessment of quite a few intelligence agencies. Islamofascists were working on bombs there, and these wonderful Allah-approved "weapons specialists" unintentionally blew themselves up.

Trump said basically the same, for which he was of course immediately chastised. Some here on this forum also condemned him for it, because it's almost certainly correct.

And we can't have that, anno domini 2020.

Author, I might agree with some of your stipulations, but lest we forget that "belief" and "proof" are two different things.

Let's see if debris investigation will provide confirmation to your theory.

Another thing that we must not forget is explanation of initial explosion and fire that triggered much bigger one.

And they want to be exempted from laws that require abortion facilities to bury or cremate the remains of aborted babies.

The cult’s plan is to challenge the pro-life laws based on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which ensures the government does not unnecessarily interfere with people’s religious freedom.

According to the Friendly Atheist, “By saying abortions in the first trimester are a religious ritual for their members, any states that have their own RFRA laws — and most anti-abortion states have them — would theoretically have to show why their … restrictions should override the Satanists’ religious freedom.”

So far, all of the Satanic Temple’s lawsuits against pro-life laws have failed. In June, a federal appeals court rejected their latest attempt at challenging Missouri’s informed consent law. In 2019, the Missouri Supreme Court dismissed another one of the Satanic Temple’s lawsuits. But every time they lose, they try again with a new approach.

The Satanic Temple is heavily involved in abortion activism in the U.S. Breitbart once described its work as a “pro-abortion crusade to come to the aid of America’s largest abortion provider,” Planned Parenthood.

According to the Friendly Atheist blog, the satanists described their surgical abortion ritual in detail Wednesday. They said it involves two tenets of their religion involving bodily autonomy and adherence to “best scientific practices.”

Big Mistake, Huge mistake. Hezbollah eliminated thousands of human shields in one massive blast and now they cannot even blame Israel. Israel would not do such a thing so Hezbollah can only blame themselves. It was Hezbollah's bomb storage unit and it needs to be noted that Hezbollah does not need more storage places for their weapons of self destruction.

I suspect the initial explosion was as author stated - of Hezbollah munitions or missile fuel, but the final enormous explosion was of long-stored (and maybe forgotten) fertilizer.

This article is quite accurate. My theory is that Ammonium Nitrate was brought to this port and left there. It was initially reported that the Lebanese government confiscated the load for some odd reason. I believe that Hezbollah discovered the Ammonium Nitrate and planned to infiltrate Israel and use it as a weapon of mass destruction. I also believe that they were preparing to ship it to Haifa or Tel Aviv when an accidental explosion occurred. It was easy to ship it down the Mediterranean outside of Israeli waters and then make a mad dash to one of these ports and be either detonated by a timer, set to explode, or by a suicide bomber. Ammonium Nitrate should be considered as the poor mans atomic bomb. Israel should be on high-alert believing that Hezbollah may attack to hide intelligence that will link them to this foiled plot against Israel.

With all due respect to the author of this article, I do not buy his story. Expert witnesses who provide Court evidence abroad have stated there were two explosions - the initial mild fire followed by that of
ammonium nitrate that produced the white cloud similar to a nuclear explosion in physical appearance and the reddish brown smoke as a result of the nitrogen dioxide being produced as a result of the decomposition
of the ammonium nitrate over a long period of time, ie the years that the ammonium nitrate had been stored since it was confiscated.

Anyone using explosives would take adequate precautions for their storage but storage of fertiliser such as ammonium nitrate does not require such high level of precaution.
